A recent study showed that oral ciprofloxacin (Cipro®) eye drops can help treat bacterial infections, including eye infections. Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that belongs to a class of drugs called fluoroquinolones, which are often used to treat infections of the ear, nose, throat, skin, urinary tract, and lungs. It can also be used to treat viral infections, such as pneumonia or bronchitis, by targeting the bacteria that cause these infections.
Researchers at the University of Southern California and other high-income institutions reported that they found that oral ciprofloxacin eye drops can significantly reduce the risk of developing an infection in patients with bacterial eye infections. The study, which involved more than 2,000 people in California, found that oral ciprofloxacin eye drops could also help reduce the risk of eye infection in patients with a bacterial eye infection.
This could be especially important for patients who have had eye infections that aren’t caused by a bacterial infection, said the study authors. The study found that oral ciprofloxacin eye drops could be used to treat an eye infection, such as a bacterial eye infection caused by a certain bacteria. However, the drug should not be used for bacterial eye infections other than an eye infection caused by a bacteria.
“This was a really important study,” said, an associate professor at the USC Department of Health and Medical Sciences, who wasn’t involved in the study. “The findings don’t really suggest that ciprofloxacin eye drops is safe. But it does suggest that oral ciprofloxacin eye drops could be useful for the prevention of a bacterial eye infection.”
Ciprofloxacin eye drops was first approved in 1991 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of infections caused by a bacterial infection, according to the study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association journal. It is now available as over-the-counter (OTC) ointments for mild or moderate infections.
Although the OTC version of ciprofloxacin is available without a prescription, it can be effective in treating a wide range of bacterial infections, including pneumonia and bronchitis, according to the study. A prescription for a topical ointment, called, can help reduce the risk of bacterial eye infection, and it may also be recommended for people who have a history of eye problems.
Dr. Michael T. Rifkin, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues found that oral ciprofloxacin eye drops can reduce the risk of developing a bacterial infection, such as a bacterial eye infection caused by a certain bacteria.
“This is the first time we have shown that oral ciprofloxacin eye drops could effectively reduce the risk of a bacterial eye infection,” said Rifkin. “This is the first time we have shown that oral ciprofloxacin eye drops can also reduce the risk of developing an eye infection.”
This may be especially important for patients who have an eye infection caused by a bacterial eye infection, including pneumonia, which can cause pneumonia, according to the study.
“The ability of a drug to lower the risk of bacterial eye infection should be an important area of research,” said Rifkin. “This is one area where the drug is effective and safe.”

It is a prescription drug that is sold under a brand name, called, and is available for OTC in the United States. The drug works by inhibiting a specific enzyme, which is called DNA gyrase, which is necessary for bacterial replication.
